Cocteau Twins delicacy

topic posted Sun, November 27, 2005 - 12:26 AM by  Shimmer
I was wondering if there is anyone else out there who has made love to CT'S music, listened to Cocteau Twins while on psychedelics or MDMA and who has actually cried from how beautiful a song of theirs is (like Lazy Calm, Sea-swallow me, sigh's smell of farewell, etc.). I have had real intense experiences while listening to Cocteau Twins where my heart has been blasted wide open. (I would have to say that CT and MDMA are made for each other).

    Yes...many times.

In my psychedelic college years of 1996-98 I was more into taking LSD and listening to the Twins than going to classes. *LOL* I turned a lot of people on to them; for a long time I proselytised their music like it was a religion almost. I would extol the virtues of their music, what I perceived as its transcendental & spiritual qualities. I met a guy in Olympia who had done an interpretive dance to "Aikea Guinea," which sounded like a lovely idea. Once when me and several good friends ate magic mushrooms I played Heaven or Las Vegas just as they were kicking in and Cherry Colored Funk sounded unbelievably cool; everyone felt it and was like "who IS this?" in this awed way. We also took Ecstasy once at a friend's house and played Four Calendar Cafe and it sounded impossibly beautiful.

Don't need drugs to appreciate their music though. Just the other night I listened to The ITchy Glowbo Blow and it brought tears to my eyes. (The ending of that song is just cosmic.) And I was sober as the Pope.

Yes, I agree that one doesn't need to be under the influence of a sacrament or recreational drug in order to appreciate and be moved to tears by CT's music. I am just acknowledging the really intense and beautiful times I have had due to listening to CT while X-ing or shrooming and that the CT's heavily contributed to the experience. I have several times cried out of joy from both listening to CT while sober and from joy and immense appreciation while coming down from a beautiful sacramental journey while listening to the Twins. Sincerely, Jeremy

"Persephone" is the song that ALWAYS gets to me- there's something about the way Liz sings in that track that can ALWAYS turn my day around.

I also lost my virginity to "Kookaburra" (not that anyone cares to know that :P) so it will always have a special place in the ol' love muscle.

Yes, I love Persephone and Kookaburra. Concerning my question that started off this post. Has anyone had really beautiful times making love with a partner while listening to the Cocteau Twins? Also, by the way, has anyone been moved to tears while listening to the song: "Sea, Swallow Me" which is on Moon and the Melodies album. Everytime I listen to it I get moved to tears of joy. Thanks, Jeremy

More so than on the record M&M album, the live version from one of the more popular Twins concert bootlegs which I used to own - but I forget the name of it - but the live concert version of Sea Swallow Me from that album is incredible. Ear-splitting, mind-bending, transcendant. The other totally jaw dropping song from that bootleg was the live version of Hitherto. It has this almost tribal sound to it live; and LIz's voice is unbelievable.

I was introduced to Four-Calendar Cafe and Heaven or Las Vegas right around the time I started taking e. I agree, the two really go together well. I once did e alone and I listened to Four-Calendar Cafe on repeat the whole time. The songs Know Who You Are at Every Age and Evangeline took on whole new meanings for me; I had some amazing revelations and I worked out a lot of internal issues. It changed my life.

I remember a magical night under the influence in the dorm hall lounge of UCSC and listening to the rain and playing HOLV with friends all around and feeling like someone had laid a spiritual blanket over me. Frasier just seemed to tuck me and my then tribe into some warm bed like space as we drifted back into our default consciousness. A truly wonderful evening and I wonder what's become of those folks everytine I play HOLV.

My ex and I used to make love to Garlands. To this day, I can't put that album on without thinking of him and how amazing it was to be within the rhythm, and how perfectly the screams were timed to us.
I was with the same boyfriend when we first heard the Pink Opaque and "From the Flagstones" makes me weep and weep from it's pure beauty.

I was listening to the Moon & the Melodies while on a whale watching cruise. It was a cold overcast day, but the sea was calm and glittery and beautiful. It was a 4 hour cruise and around two hours into it, we had not seen any whales, so everyone went inside. Only the Captain and I were outside and I had "Sea Swallow Me" on. Right then, I saw the most gorgeous gray whale and her pup that I've ever seen, but she was only up for a split second before they both went back down. It happened so fast that we did not have time to call anyone out to see her, so the Captain and I just winked at eachother. To this day, I think of her and her pup when I play it. It was absolutely perfect.

i have never made love to anything by the Cocteau Twins. i preferred "pretty hate machine" by NIN, "a mind's a terrible thing to taste" and "land of rape and honey" by Ministry and "louder than bombs" by the Smiths during the time i discovered the Cocteau Twins. "blue bell knoll" was the album that set my heart aflame. during the craze of madchester, 1988-1991, i was necking copious amounts of lsd (3 -7 doses at a time). i had developed a regime for pleasant comedowns; i'd drink some milk to coat my stomach, smoke mega amounts of shitty gear, prepare a soothing bath coupled with lavender candles and the burning of white sage. then i'd sit back and ease back into regular life. "blue bell knoll" became the soundtrack to that ritual. "carolyn's fingers" still causes my boatrace to issue a grin as i remember when....

uH? 'carolyns finger'? haha i think that the range in her voice in that song would be a little distracting to make love to.but give me 'Pink Opague' any day

I have been very recently immersing myself in CT's music like night and day just cuz i've had some time off from everything else and well, i'm kind've checking out music from the early 90's all over again kinda sorta but without all the hallucinogens this time 'round ...
But yeah ... their music *makes* me trip-out and feel MDMA-like and sexy I guess , sure ...
I especially like four calendar cafe and heaven or las vegas(better production value and better gear used in studio, etcetra) but it's all good, really ...And, I spose I associate heaven or l.v. with a certain ex-gf from back then who was waaay into them ... shrug ... haven't spoken to her in ... since then ... haha .

        Another addendum ....

Been examining the blue bell knoll album carefully ...

Yeah, it's quality ... everyone always talks about it and the older than that stuff , even ...
Guess I didn't give it enough of a listen until now while sober .. haha ...
Again .. no drugs anymore these days outside of some coffee ...
Her vocal range is pretty extreme and the guitar parts are pretty far-out in some tracks ...

        Good good ....
