Tue, November 4, 2003 - 12:21 AMI have this brain function where I can just accept a phonetic sound without ever needing to interpret it as a word. It think it comes from growing up with ABBA on the radio. (Remember "Wannadoo"?)
<<Wannadoo. Wannadoo alien anyhoo..>>
It makes singing along with CT so easy. -

Tue, November 4, 2003 - 7:58 AMhahahahah. I dont even know if those lyrics are right its just what I hear.. I have to think of a song now, one that I really dont kow the lyrics too. And try to sound it out and see what everyone else says.

Re: Lyric Contest
Thu, December 11, 2003 - 7:03 PMI think that CT would have had a hard time starting a single note without ABBA, especially some of thatlater ABBA stuff, and the vocal production. Same with MBV. But ABBA doesn't have Robin (or Kevin).

Re: Lyric Contest
Sun, March 7, 2004 - 7:56 PMThere is another Cocteau Twins forum I belong to where they have the "supposed" actual words to most of thier songs. I read them and most of them made sense to me. What bothered be about knowing what the words were was that I always thought she was singing in gaelic or channeling messages from another dimension. I still believe the latter. Even though I never understood all of the words most of the songs still made me cry in a happy sort of amazed kind of way like the first time I heard Blue Bell Knoll and the first time I made love while Victorialand played.
If anyone is interested in the other C.T. forum let me know and I'll post it here. I just don't have it available right this moment.

Re: Lyric Contest
Sun, March 14, 2004 - 4:49 PMThe thing to remember is that Liz rarely wrote lyrics that made much sense until Heaven or Las Vegas. Blue Bell Knoll is supposed to be the apex of incomprehension, where she admitted that she was just throwing totally unconnected words together for much of the album. When she did write lyrics that had some sort of lyrical meaning, she would obsfucate them so completely with odd phrasing, weird pronounciations or a combination of both - to the point that the original words would be completely lost.
A good example is the difference between the album version of Bluebeard (from 4 Calendar Cafe) and the "acoustic" version from the cd single. Another good example was witnessed by anyone that saw Liz sing for the 4CC tour - she was so obsessed with obsfucating the lyrics that she turned many of the songs into scat-ish freeform vocal exercises. -

Tue, May 25, 2004 - 5:21 PMHello everyone. I just joined this tribe. My name is Don and Cocteau Twins are my absolute favorite band. Akashawen, I would love to know the link to that forum you mentioned. Xander, the lyrics to Violaine were written backwards and sang phoenetically.
Okay, my favorite songs is A Kissed Out Red Floatboat. This is my interpretation...
I'm sad
I said love you'd miss my heart
Made love here inside
I thought he'd known her even though
He's so mean to her
Only a game called love
Even as I had to you so guard it
He needed all you had
Be happy
He needed all you had
He needed all you had
I've been here
Here with what he asked you for
And I got what he thought
He didn't know
He hit me
He'd love you, you know
He needed all you had
Be happy...

mine are all about food. ;)
okay here goes:
from victorialand--but i don't remember the song title sorry!
the song is in 3/4 or 6/8 time i think. it has a waltzy feel to it, with strumming guitar making up the main melody, but at the end of it she says "chicken pot pie"
and there is one on...blue bell knoll i think that sounds like she's saying "peanut buttah peanut buttah peanut buttah"

i've got one more, but cannot remember the song title or album...drat. but she says "jesus chili chili chili..."

Also, the more I listen to A Kissed Out Red Floatboat I'm thinking that the chorous is "He did love me back" instead of what I wrote earlier. What do you all think?

Re: Lyric Contest
Sun, May 22, 2005 - 12:22 PMLove this thread!
Most of the intelligible lyrics come from Garlands (although I'm guessing on a few):
"Now listen my children, the devil lies dead-we wax and wane, we laugh in their faces; the devil lies dead and we wax & wane, devil lies dead and we wax & wane..." ("Wax & Wane")
"Of the bosom, of the breast, of the forehead, of the face; blind, dumb, deaf in our face; I'm a slave or I'm part of it; my mouthing at you, my tongue the stake; I should welt should I hold you, I should gash should I kiss you..." ("Blind, Dumb, Deaf")
"Things from the forests die here, but I don't; dead forest things are offered here, but I'm not..." ("But I'm Not")
"Wing water, fetid river, dirty rich soil, strong and fertile...; the then-shallow she, Earth as we know it; the then-halo she, a sky for the sacred; stars in my eyes, stars in my face; womb in the belly, capital place" ("Shallow Then Halo")
"Garlands evergreen, forget-me-not wreaths, chaplets see me drugged, I could die in a rosary, die in a rosary, die in a rosary, die in a rosary..." ("Garlands")...although I loved the interpretation, "die in a grocery" (perhaps Liz was listening to the Clash, "Lost in the Supermarket"...heh.)
"Grail overfloweth, there is rain, and music and there is love...; grail overfloweth, there is rain, and there's saliva and there's you" ("Grail Overfloweth")
"Hearsay please, I please deny it should be so; though I swore, by and by, ve-oooh(??), justice please..." ("Hearsay Please")
From the Lullabyes ep...
"Feathers, oars, blades; spitting the feathers; spitting out oar-blades, spitting out oar-blades..." ("Feathers-Oar-Blades")
"Get off of my, off of my, off of my...; kiss my, kiss my, kiss my...; barking & biting, all more on starsails;...head over heels, it's all but an...all but an ark-lark" ("All But an Ark-Lark")
From Head Over Heels:
"When Mama was Moth" opens with the lyrics "sunburst and snowblind" and at one point Liz sings "when mama was moth, I took bulb form...", but that's all I recognize.
"Tinderbox of a Heart": "so bloody and blunt, with big crystal eyes" and "tinderbox of a heart, left a shell is all."
"No longer multi-colored, multifoiled; I'm no longer multi-colored, I'm just multifoiled" ("Multifoiled")
"Fly, won't you fly...it's that whirly-gig, it's because of whirl-jack...; please won't you fly..." ("Because of Whirl-Jack")
Some I've guessed on from Treasure:
"Peep-bo, peach-blow, pan-door, pompadour; pee-wee, pea-sweet...." [I have no idea on the rest of it, except that we all know Liz nicknamed Ivo "Peep-bo"]. The chorus is something like..."he's a deer or a doe (door?), it's Ivo; deer or a doe (door?), oh it's Ivo..."
Four Calendar Cafe:
"Cry, cry, cry 'til you know why, I lost myself, identify. I'm not real if I deny it; I won't heal unless I cry; I can't grieve so I won't grow, I won't heal 'til I let it go..." ("Know Who You Are at Every Age")
"Are you the right man for me? Are you safe, are you my friend? Or are you toxic for me? Will you betray my confidence?" ("Bluebeard") -
-
Re: Lyric Contest
Sun, May 22, 2005 - 12:53 PMOh, I almost forgot...
"Singing on a fever stream, yow-to lovable the bone on me, but is it heaven or Las Vegas? Would Jesus want to ride around and sing this to me? ...Must be why I'm thinking of Las Vegas, why it's no ride around and sing this to me... maybe there, Ali was real and went to see the heart be personal. I suspect I'm singing to a tune and turn into a veal steak until you swoon...."
("Heaven or Las Vegas") -

Re: Lyric Contest
Sun, May 22, 2005 - 4:25 PMSorry for the third post in a day on this subject, but I was just listening to Head Over Heels again (all this discussion of lyrics put me in the mood), and I realized there's more decipherable lyrics on this album as well.
"Glass Candle Grenades" - the chorus goes something like "glass candles (still we'll not keel over, keel over, keel over...)," and "My Love Paramour" contains the lyrics "ooze out and away onehow." My 'translation' of the song lyrics goes something like...
"Two different fates, my love paramour ooze out and away; two different fates they fig up my love ooze out and away; two different fates, my love paramour ooze out and away onehow...
Love if it's swallowed for pity must ooze out and away onehow; love if it's swallowed for pity must ooze out and away onehow...
Two different fates of my love paramour ooze out and away onehow." -

Re: Lyric Contest
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 6:13 AMthis is wonderful, hearing others articulate that they don't need to know what the words "mean", to be moved by their sound. it demonstrates that music is a language that communicates on a level other than the linguistic, and it's power lies in the abstract sounds we are all relating to, rather than the literal content.
with liz, it feels honest still, an honest expression of something ineffable. like infants, babbling to express something in them, in love with the sound of the words, in a language no one else knows.
i have heard of one song at least, where liz catalogues the latin names of butterflies. can anyone tell me which it is? -

Tue, June 21, 2005 - 8:44 PMWhat, you want the lyrics to Carolyn's Fingers too?
When he said, 'You are full of love'
She fell down into this dirty mess
Some people see me laugh and tell us,
'It's wrong to make fun of me'
(Even they don't give any more; try, try to fall)
She fell down into this mess
(Even they don't give any more; try, try to fall)
She fell down and he's so sick of it all
And of me
This part not out of her saw fit to drop
Whispers might prove it all
(You're just closer to me when you fall, but you broke)
This would prove it all
(You're just closer to me, but you broke)
This would prove it all
Sleep now...
You susur, try to talk
Reach out for that hand...
Reach out for that hand...
(And even they don't give any more; try, try to fall)
(Even they don't give; try, try to fall)
You're just closer to me at the fall
But you don't want, want my hand
You're just closer to me
But you don't want, want my hand

Cups of pearly dew drops drops
Weeks in our company
Cups of pearly dew drops drops
chorus
Ruby sun's erotic cups
Rose the pearly dew drops drops
Dizzy like the, like the pearly pearly pearly
Wipes the pearly dew lips off
verse 2
And as he jumps the puddle
To try to turn to loving these
Where still I am messed up
So then he turns around and saw
ending

Rose the pearly dew drops drops
Dizzy like the, like the pearly pearly pearly
Wipes the pearly dew lips off
