This is probably a really stupid question, but a Nissan SUV commercial has as its background music that sounds (to me) very CT-like. I've mentioned this to one my CT-listening buddies, and he agrees.

Re: CT Nissan Commercial?
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 4:20 PMHas everyone forgotten that the Cocteau Twins had actually written music for commercials in the past. Have you not heard the two fruitopia tracks that are floating around the net? I used to be very much against musicians using their songs in commercials but as an adult I've come to find that any way you can make a living, I'm totally cool with. I worked in a Hollywood hotel for a while and saw quite a few old school punks spending thousands of dollars staying in fancy rooms and riding in limos while getting on stage in torn t-shirts and acting all anti-corporate. You know, a job is a job. And while I enjoy their music, if they want to make extra cash by signing a document letting someone use their music then more power too them. I wish I could do it. LOL!
This does remind me of a story that Laurie Anderson used to tell at her shows. She heard one of her songs being played in a GM car commercial, O Superman (which is quite a bizzarre song to be played in a car commercial, I must say). She had not signed any agreement for them to use it so she called the company and said that while she was flattered that they liked her song so much to use it in their commercial, she had not given them the right. The told her they didn't care and if she was so upset about it she could sue them. After looking into legal costs she decided that it would not be worth the time or money for her to sue them and dropped the case. But the thing about the whole story that she found really amusing was the fact that the commercial in which they had stolen her song for was to advertise their cars' newest anti-theft device. LOL!

Re: CT Nissan Commercial?
Tue, May 3, 2005 - 6:16 PMMy dear Stuart -- I wasn't making any sort of value judgment or statement... I was merely curious. Even if it were not a CT song, I find it interesting that that sound has found its way into what advertisers obviously believe is popular consciousness -- that it speaks to their targeted demographic.
To digress a little, one of my favorite misapplications of sound was during a few Olympics ago. It was one of those behind the scenes, human interest moments, but the background music was the instrumental section of "Sleeping in the Devil's Bed" (found on one of the Wim Wenders soundtracks -- "Wings of Desire" or "Until the End of the World"). The irony was delicious. -

Re: CT Nissan Commercial?
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 11:22 AM...which reminds me...I once happened to catch 5 minutes of Baywatch (of all things hahaha), and it just happend to feature a scene where some people were swimming underwater (I think) and Cocteau Twins was playing in the background. I didn't care that it was on a crappy show...I was just stoked to hear CT ANYWHERE high profile, if you know what I mean. hahaha...even Baywatch.
Somebody must have been a fan! -

Wed, May 4, 2005 - 2:44 PMWhen I was kid in Maine one day i was in Ames and heard 'bluebeard' playing over the muzak. I was amazed and happy to hear it, like you were saying Natasha, played anywhere (although Ames in rural Maine hardly high profile)... but also kind of sickened to hear it used for muzak.
Ditto. Someone must have been a fan. -

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 5:14 PMI've heard Cocteaux on CSI (the original) once...can't remember which song, but I do know it was them...something recent. Also heard Massive Attack, something off Mezzanine.
I know there's a Nissan SUV commercial that uses an Air song, Surfing on a Rocket, but the commercial's a little old. When I first heard it, I thought it was My Bloody Valentine until I did an online search and uncovered the source of the music in some chatroom. Perhaps if you know the model of the Nissan SUV featured in the commercial, you can Google it with the word "music," which is how I discovered it was not MBV in my commercial, but those French rip-off artists, Air. -

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 7:01 PMThank you elisa, that's the commercial and song in question... apparently it is effective enough to be re-introduced as I saw it only a few days ago. (yeah, yeah, but it was on Bravo).
As stated before, I don't know that much about music, so please tell me more about "Air."

Thu, May 5, 2005 - 11:38 AMI will happily leave my thumb in my butt if it represents the fact that artists, not their adoring psychophants, have their say on what they do with their material. We should feel blessed that they have enriched our lives with the beauty that they created. We should be glad for them if they never have day jobs again, even if it means they have to sell their work in less than savory environs. I would rather see Simon Raymonde writing jingles for Macdonalds than working behind the counter of one. -

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 12:43 PMCool!!! A flame war on the Cocteau Twins tribe! Anyway, what's wrong with Air?
And they used to play Bluebeard at Thrifty's when I was (dear lord) scooping ice cream. It was the only time of the day I would be happy. What an awful job. -

Fri, May 6, 2005 - 1:27 AMAir??? I only have one album ("Moon Safari"), and it's pretty good (except for 2 or 3 tunes which I think suck a bit...). They're a duo from France and they're...well...how do I describe them...like a cross betwen trip-hop and retro dance/lounge with soundscapey-type stuff. Oh...and Moogs.
Pretty pleasant. Except for those 2 or 3 tracks (on that album anyway). -

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Fri, May 6, 2005 - 9:18 AMthey also did the virgin suicides soundtrack which i think pretty good. -

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 10:26 AMI refer to Air as rip-off artists because they steal great sounds from everyone else & kind of turn them into their own. Their newest cd, Talkie Walkie (which features Surfing on a Rocket, used in the Nissan Armada commercial ....sidebar: don't you think it's obvious when they start naming SUV's after a fleet of ships?) ....ANYway, IMO, Talkie Walkie sounds in parts like MBV, a dash of Cocteaux, 10CC (e.g., the synths & vocal production on I'm Not in Love), an airbrushed Stereolab, and "adult alternative" elevator music. One of the two main French guys does some vocals, and they have a French female vocalist as well (featured in Surfing on a Rocket). I still kinda like their records, though. -

I'm so tempted to say "the French, hmmph," but I don't want to be pegged as a Bushite... which I am vehemently (sp?) not!
But, "Air" is French, no? 'nough said.
(it's a joke, people... you should hear my one about the French military salute...hands on top of their heads.)

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 11:25 AMEverything old is new again. It is truly rare for really orignal work to come along (like Cocteau Twins, for example) and that should definitely be celebrated. But that doesn't mean everything else is bogus or a rip-off.
And anyway, sn't imitation the sincerest form of flattery? -

Sir, you are absolutely right. It's in my nature to be a smart-ass, and I'm coming off a long few days of work and little sleep. I'm always looking for the new and interesting, and will give "Air" a try... I actually really like the jingle.
But it's so much fun to poke at our gaullic brethren.
(I used to practice my German by reading the Deutsches version of Asterix and Obelix ... though strictly speaking those books are Belgian rather than French.... see I can't control myself!)

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 1:37 PMHmmm...well then you might as well trash the entire trip-hop genre. The Massive Attacks, Trickys and Portisheads of the world. It's all based on Isaac Hayes samples and 70's soul.
Doesn't mean it doesn't sound great! ;) -

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Sun, May 8, 2005 - 9:53 PMGee, thanks. I feel so much better. There are some "rip-off artists" who take a sample, borrow an idea and do something different with it, which Portishead and Massive Attack have done w/ that Isaac Hayes sample. Air, on the other hand, don't create anything I'd consider that different or original. Pleasant, yes, but not very groundbreaking. As another example, if I want to listen to a band that was influenced by the Cocteau Twins, I'll listen to Bel Canto, Caterwaul or Lush, rather than Orange or Love Spirals Downwards. -

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 4:21 PMno need to be sarcastic....I was just saying!!
Christ, can't people discuss things without getting uptight around here? And not you specifically, Elisa, but ....well...everyone!!
(altough I do agree with you about the non-groundbreaking thing. I never fell for any spin-offs---no Bel Catos etc for me. They just try too hard, in my opinion. -
-
Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 5:00 PM(the longer version of my post, by the way, did state that I at least prefer the Massive Attack sampling approach was of rehashing something I grew up with rather than either a poor sopy or a bad cover song...I just don't think that Air are complete rip-ofss. Not brilliant by a long shot, but not thieves by AS long a shot either. If you know what I mean. As sonebody else said, these days a shitload of bands steal from the past.)

Re: CT Nissan Commercial? re: oh, No, NO!!!!
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 3:26 AMI think air is a wonderful band...I wouldn't like them if they disrepected the music they sampled but "That" they didn't do...I also agree that "most" music now-a-days has nothing pioneering about...But let us not forget the "Coco Rosies" and the "Clouddeads" out their that are breaking ground to new sounds....
