Hi all,

I've recently been introduced to the Twins (thanks to the Christbiter!) and I simply can't get enough of this sound (well, Blue Bell Knoll and Heaven or Las Vegas, so far). Any recommendations for other artists I might love? Thanks.

I'm right in line with everyone else with a few to add:

    Portishead
    Mazzy Star
    Eliza Carthy
    Sade

Something about those voices that send me away.

If you are into Sade, check out French pop/jazz/bossa nova diva Isabelle Antena. She will have a new one out end of Feb. She is so much better than Sade. Better voice and songs.

One band nobody has mentioned is Blood Ruby. Very much in the vein of the Twins and best of all, every track is downloadable from their website for free. Grab them while you can, I promise you won't be disappointed.

Ditto on Moon And The Melodies Ariana. Also, VICTORIALAND by the CT's is to me the most relaxing record I own. I'm a dj, and radio show producer and i have a TON music! I also have a huge collection of music that i consider "relaxing" but whenever i have trouble getting to sleep, that's the one album i put on every time!

In fact, i've never heard a Twins release i DIDN'T like...that's a rarity for me. Ofcourse, your opinion may differ but I just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.

There's also a Japanese Indie rock band called *MONO* (just played here at bottom of the hill) that is an instrumental band in the vein of *Dirty Three* but with a hard rock edge.

And how could I forget, Lowlife!! That was Will Hedggie's (Garland-era bassist) band after he left the Twins. "Diminuendo" and "Swirl, it Swings" are amazing. Hard to find these days, but worth the effort. Info here: www.permanentsleep.com/

I'd also add Verve, their first one, Storm in Heaven (which is what I turn to when Sigur Ros gets too ethereal for me). Liz also did some backing vox w/ some other '80s bands, most notably The Wolfgang Press (also signed to 4AD) and Felt, a song called "Primitive Painters." 4AD's releases of the two Bulgarian Voices cds might give you food for thought, too, although Liz has never cited them as an influence. Liz likes Harriet Sunday (The Sundays), Edith Piaf, and Billie Holliday, so that might give you something to go on.

"Primitive Painters" totally rules. I got turned onto Felt when I was introduced to this song.

Don't forget Liz also did vocals to "Angel" from Massive Attack. ;)

I'd suggest their first four - especially Birds of Passage and Shimmering, Warm & Bright. Their first cd, White Out Conditions, is a little more industrial than their subsequent releases, but Dreaming Girl (the single from that cd) is a Cocteaus song with words, and Agassiz is the best DCD song that DCD never wrote. Their 4th cd, Magic Box, is the most straightforward pop album of their early stuff, and kind of reminds me in parts of the Sugarcubes. Anneli Drecker, Bel Canto's singer, released a solo cd in 2000 called Tundra that's kind of Bjorkish - electronic beats & interesting vocals. Bel Canto have continued to release cds in Norway, their home country, but you can only find them online at expensive import prices. Same with Tundra. I had to order that through a friend who special ordered it from EMI Norway.

Another band to check out: Hugo Largo, and their singer/composer Mimi Goese, who released a solo cd, Soak, in 1998.

'Angel'?? I thought she only did 'Teardrop', 'Black Milk' and 'Group Four' (was it??)....I can't hear her on 'Angel' at all...only Horace Andy.

(how weird) I just replied to a post that seems to have disappeared. The one saying not to forget she also did 'Angel'.

Anyway...I second most of the seuggestions (particularly the Goldfrapp 'Felt Mountain' one) and would like to add Broadcast to the list.

My fave is "Treasure," especially the track "Ivo." I heartily recommend this album. I don't know that much about the music scene, and am learning from the other responses.

But if you're into interesting, absorbing sounds, I would suggest Laurie Anderson, especially her early stuff. It can be very minimalistic, but her second(?) album includes a wonderfully rich duet with Peter Gabriel.

For me, music is about time and place. I fell into CT, Laurie Anderson, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel in my college years (early/mid 80s), so although wildly different in style, for me these folks have a common thread.

Oh yeah, check out Brian Eno's "ambient" albums... Music for Airports and the album that has the Moon on the cover. (A lot of my stuff is on vinyl, and I'm too lazy to dig it up right now.)

But "Treasure" is gold. I was listening to it last night.

Brian Eno and Harold Budd released an album called "the Pearl" that is very very good if you like ambient stuff. I use it for massage. Of course the Harold Budd/CT release "moon & the melodies" is a must too...
