Blue Bell Knoll, for sure. And Heaven or Las Vegas coming up a close second.

I'm with Pup on this one. Blue Bell Knoll, Heaven or Las Vegas, and I would add, Four Calendar Cafe also.

I have gone through phases having different favorites at different times, but the above are the ones that just 'keep on giving' year after year...
      • Re: Favorite song/album?

Heaven or Las Vegas was the one that got me into them, and blue bell knoll has some gems ("the Itchy Glowbo Blow" is clearly the best song on that album)...
but, I always thought 4 calendar Cafe, um ,sucked...?

        (hides!)

        >_<

I feel like they kind of Peaked at 'Treasure' plateaued through HOLV, then kind of lost the magic.
I mean, "violane" and "seekers who are lovers" managed to reach me, but I honestly feel their later stuff pales in comparison to the mid-eighties magic.
but, you know, I'm glad that some fans are listing 4CCafe as their favorite...
it renews my faith in the twins knowing that they hadn't just given up after HOLV.

        ( grins )

So Jezza, so in what ways does Four-Calendar Cafe suck? I'm not too critical of a listener to the cocteau; they just always work me the right way, that I've not deeply studied the various stages, etc. I assume too you're stating that in comparsion to their other albums, and not sucked in general?
          • Re: Favorite song/album?

            Fri, April 15, 2005 - 7:43 PM
yes, I am comparing this album to their other work in saying that it sucks.
Most good bands put out at least one "loser" album, just as many not so good bands put out a really rockin' album. For example, "Everything's Allright Forever" by the Boo Radleys is an awesome album, however their later work is basically just mainstream alterna-pop. Throwing Muses put out 5 awesome albums, followed by "University", which is by no means a bad album, but it is definitely a low point in their career.

            That being said,
I feel that there is a simple yet complex intensity to the Twins early work. "Head Over Heels" doesn't sound like anything else from 1983, or anything ever for that matter. by "Treasure" they'd managed to blend the dark, industrial edge with a softer, melodic beauty. The music from this period was truly innovative and original, it really stands out against other eighties music.
My dislike of their later work stems from the loss of their dark cutting edge roots, most noticably on "Blue Bell Knoll"
HOLV seemed like a step in the right direction, and is definitely their most accessible album, but I think they should've just stopped there.
4CC just kind of sounds like elevator music for the most part. If I didn't know better I would hardly believe that the same band wrote such underground classics as "wax and wane" or "hitherto"...
It's not that I think it's bad music, but I'd have to listen to all their other albums untill I got sick of them to put 4CC on, and believe me I've tried.

            -_-

            ...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......

          Jezza,

Thanks for stimulating this great conversation. However, I'm afraid that for having the opinion that anything the Cocteau Twins has done sucks - you must die.

I sentence you to death by repeated listenings to Four Calendar Cafe. The death sentence is only reversible by the (genuine) appreciation of this fine album. I'm sure you'll see the light before you shuffle off This Mortal Coil...oh sorry, wrong band...

yeh they were amazing around the Treasure period but had another explosion of experimentation with the Echoes in a Shallow Bay and Tiny dynamine period late 80s. The Violaine remix was an absolute gem and sounds like a precursor to garlands. They just mad so many amazing sonds. Summerhead is another that stick in mind.

My favorite song is A Kissed Out Red Floatboat. I always sing along with it and I've changed the lyrics many times, it seems that every time I go through a major change, the song changes with me. Maybe that's the secret to why thier music stays with you.

My other favs are Carolyn's Fingers, Heaven or Las Vegas, All the songs on the Bluebeard ep, The Spangle Maker,, and Aiekea-Gunnea (the live version on Pearly, Pink and Red always makes me cry).

      "Those eyes, that mouth"
is definitely an awsome awesome track
I've been listening to that one a lot lately.
Mad love for "loves easy tears"

      In response to Dreamer-
I don't think 4CC "sucks" in comparison to say, Winger, or Journey...
just it pales in comparison to the Twins earlier work.

Judging by all the postings in response to this thread so far, Most people tend to pick favorites from the 1984-87 period, including "Treasure" and "Loves Easy Tears"
so, I don't think I'm mistaken by saying that *most* twins fans agree that their best music was coming from this time period...

And yes, of course all of their music is amazing.

Favorite Songs: Crushed, Hitherto, Musette and Drums, Summerhead, Amelia, and a dozen others. Of late, I've been listening to Pearly Dewdrops' Drops at least 3 times a day. I never really appreciated that song until recently.

    Favorite Albums:
    -Treasure- amazing!
-Victorialand, Garlands, and Blue Bell Knoll all tie in for second.

My favorite EP is a tie between Love's Easy Tears and The Pink Opaque

Impossible to decide, but I will try.

I guess I could say the first time I heard it on college radio back in 86 would be the one.

'Love's Easy Tears' from their 12" EP. I still remember the awesome colors and tints of the artwork.

'Pink Orange Red' is another and 'Eggs and their Shells'

LP's? 'Treasure' and 'Head Over Heels'.

My favorite has always been Pink Opaque. My favorite song, and this is like picking my favorite child, is Spangle Maker. In general, the 83-86 period trumps everything else for me.

Though I keep playing Seekers Who Are Lovers over and over again tonight..

The first two CT songs I ever heard were Pearly Dewdrops' Drops and Love's Easy Tears, so they remain in my list of favorites. The Spanglemaker is another one. While I was in the middle of my biggest high school dilemma - whether I'd be a "goth" and listen to Depeche Mode or a "mod" and appreciate the Smiths, I bought the Pink Opaque compilation and it changed my world. I recall how surprised I was when I discovered it was Liz singing Song to the Siren for This Mortal Coil. I'd thought it was a different vocalist. I appreciated her vocal range even more.

I started this post, and I've posted already, but I thought I'd try again, just to see how consistent I am:

      songs:
      In the Gold Dust Rush
      Hitherto
      Quisquose
      Those Eyes, THat Mouth
Frou Frou Foxes in Midsummer Fires
      The Itchy Glowbo Glow
      Great Spangeled Fritillary

      Albums:
      Victorialand
      Treasure
and recently I'm feeling really more and more inclined to list

I'm very new to them, but a mate said great things about the album with Harold Budd - pretty hard to track down but it's just beautiful.

Moon & the Melodies it's called.

[Lisa Gerard of DCD did the music for recent movie Whalerider if anyone's interested - good movie - didn't notice the music so much]

The moon and the melodies is quite easy to "track down".
I have a used copy, and I frequently find used and new copies in excess at Amoeba, not to mention their readily available on amazon.com, or direct from 4AD mail order.
          FYI...
Harold Budd also collaborates with RObin Guthrie on the Mysterious SKin soundtrack, and with Brian ENo on an album called "the Pearl"
          checkit!
  • Re: Favorite song/album?

I'm a little surprised that only one other person so far has named my favorite song (see the name).

Second favorite: I borrowed up the BBC Sessions double-disc set from the library a few months ago, and fell in love with the version there of Pepper-Tree.

Back in college I found myself -- like I think a lot of us do -- liking difference songs/albums at different times. Interestingly, I found myself feeling about Cocteau Twins in college the same way I felt about (of all things) Pink Floyd in high school: there were so many songs, and of so many different varieties, I could always turn to something of theirs no matter what I wanted.

Certain songs/albums of course get played more often than others, of course. I probably wore out my 'Tiny Dynamine / Echoes in a Shallow Bay' CD when I was feeling withdrawn and down for a few years in New York. I think I listened to 'Treasure' and '4CC' once, and promptly gave them away (and I love it that there are huge CT fans that feel the exact opposite!). Garlands will never grow old, though -- and I try to limit my consumption of Quisquose for fear of overplaying its magic.

I'll never forget seeing them live in New York in 1996; so thankful I caught them before they stopped regular touring!

    =)

-I feel you on 4CC, definitely a low point for the twins... but to lump that in with Treasure? especially if Quisquose is your favorite song, that's right out of the Treasure era, 10 years before 4CC... how can you even compare them???

And in the couple months since my response to this post, I'm really getting into Head Over Heels- so much so as to change my response to that.

Yeah, I don't know what to say -- 4CC and Treasure are definitely worlds apart, but there's something about each of them that never grabbed me; something about the whole 'renaissance'-y feel of Treasure, I think.

Fortuantely I did give Treasure away to a good home -- Captain Salamander, if you know him (I see you're a fire dancer burner). I've been meaning to give it a re-listen -- perhaps I'll steal it back at some point.

I remember when treasure was released, it was really all about discovering something very well hidden, and magestic that shone with a brilliance from the depths of their minds. To my memory (whatever is left of it), I will always clearly remember a certain time and place, a colour, a scent, people around me, what I was wearing almost to the point where it becomes embaressing. I say this because Treaure had a profound effect on me, and to this day remains my all time favourite album because it only gets better and better, and maybe one day you will realise its beauty. I know it's not an easy album, but that is the reason why its so special if not more spacial than the others.

Ever ridden an overground train while Ivo kicks in?
Been on a small boat in the middle of a huge calm lake when Otterley mutters to you?
Walked through a new autumnal forest with the sun shining through the old leaves with persephone ringing in your ear?
or how about listen to Pandora on your very first flight to discover it was supposed to be the video.

Anyway I could go on in detail but I do think you should give it a listen, perhaps on headphones out where no one can disturb you.

          :-D

I don't know why, but Donimo always reminds me of Christmas. Maybe it's the bells or the chorous. I live on the West coast now and only get a little taste of snow around the holidays when I go visit my folks back east, but Donimo always envokes that feeling of walking down a city street with the snow falling, the lights blinking on the trees and buildings, very few people are around but as the song builds towards the end you approach a celebration in a small park in the center of town.

I also insist on playing "Heaven or Las Vegas" every time I drive to Las Vegas. I start it just as we hit the strip. It's the perfect soundtrack for just a beautiful city with such a seething underbelly.
        • Re: Favorite song/album?

I know what you mean about just not "getting" an album sometimes. I have to admit I was realy resistant to "Kid A" when it came out, mostly because one of the chord progressions sounded too much like "pictures of matchstick men" by CVB, and I was like, "shit, radiohead is getting so much hype over this album, and no one even knows who CV Beethoven are!!!"
I just couldn't listen to it for political reasons, although now I'm over it.

I could see how a "rennaissance" themed album could start you off on the wrong foot, but once you get past it, "Treasure" is quite beautiful.
The layering of sounds is crisp and concise, yet still rich and textured.

          Caleb-
Definitely "HOH (+SBSB)" has moved to the front of the line for me, and "Garlands"
I've always loved these albums, but lately more so than usual.
I think I'm really into the dark, industrial, eerie sound...
          Especially
          "In THe Gold Dust Rush"
          and
          "Blind Dumb Deaf"
...and less into the ethereal melodies of "Vicotorialand" and "echoes"

I especially like the album cover on "Garlands" and the re-issue of "HOH"

I have to say, "Blue Bell Knoll" is their most over-rated album, IMHO.

  • The Moon and The Melodies ...

    Fri, September 16, 2005 - 4:13 PM
Hmmm... this is one of those unanswerable questions, because all of their albums and songs effect me differently. It depends as much on the mood I'm in as the songs themselves.

My favorite album is probably "The Moon and The Melodies," which was a collaboration with Harold Budd (and if you enjoy the Cocteau Twins, you might want to investigate Budd's minimalist compositions... the album "Four Rooms" makes a nice starting point.

One of my favorite songs is also on "The Moon and The Melodies" ... The Ghost Has No Home. Side 2 Track 2.

I'm so glad I found this tribe. I fell under the spell of the majestic Twins 10 years ago and have been bound by it ever since. There are many Cocteau songs of surpassing beauty but for money AIkea-Guinea is the most beautiful song I've ever heard, not only by the Twins but possibly by any artist ever. Simple, pure, like a flower or a seashell. This really is one of the most sublime bands of all time. Without saying anything they say more than anyone.

The ITchy GLowbo Blow from Blue Bell Knoll.

That song literally makes me see stars. The fading ending brings tears to my eyes. It is like being with God. And I'm an agnostic.

BTW - i'm starting a literary magazine here in Portland called DRECK and I would love for any Twins fans to submit pieces on what the music of the Cocteau Twins means to them. I'm going to write an essay on them myself.

As the author of this thread, I would like to clarify that one's favorite song need not be selected from ones favorite album.

        But,
        while we're getting all technical,
Hitherto is from the EP "SUnburst and Snowblind"
which also features an alternative version of "sugar Hiccup" than the one that appeared on the LP "Head Over Heels"
The two were re-released as a 2 on 1 disc entitled "Head Over heels /Sunburst and Snowblind" (CAD 313)
Hitherto is also available on "the Pink Opaque" (GAD 513)

I think I like siren song (with liz on) more than any other cocteau twins song.

[ha - surprised the soundtrack to whalerider passed me by on my earlier post - really rate it now...]

TMC are a 4 A D creation, fronted by IVO and John Fryer, the founders of the brittish indie label. The idea was to create "forced" collaborations between 4AD artists... that's why Lisa Gerrard sings with Guthrie and Raymond, and why Liz sings a Tim Buckley song and so on.
TMC has included members of Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Colourbox, Wolfgang Press, Cindytalk, X-mal Deutschland, the Breeders, and too many others to name. The songs included original compositions as well as covers of songs by the bands on the label, and otherwise. Some fans speculate that participation in TMC was obligitary for artist on the label, a kind of paying dues...
While Raymonde continued to work with Ivo of future TMC projects, the rest of the twins did not. (neither did DCD, or many of the other artists involed with IEIT). Here's a quote from Robin:
<"He [Ivo] was releasing This Mortal Coil records at the same time as ours (Head Over Heels). And he never played down the fact that This Mortal Coil is, in fact, NOT the Cocteau Twins. I mean, so he sold that first album [It'll End In Tears] by advertising the fact that me and Liz did "Song to the Siren," and that me and Liz were the Cocteau Twins at the time [although Simon, too, had joined Robin and Liz by then]. And that caused confusion...So it's left us with all these This Mortal Coil fans who think it's something we did. I don't really like that kind of music!" [Dewdrops #12, 1994]>

Love's Easy Tears is by far hands down my most favorite song. I'm not even sure why but it brings me to tears everytime I hear it.

All these cocteau fans! :):) Really good to hear that people are into the mid-80's stuff, as am I... alas too many people I meet seem to have only heard "iceblink luck". Its fun turning them on to the older stuff though.
I go through phases of having a different favorite... Donimo, Carolyn's Fingers, Sea Swallow Me... and Treasure, Victorialand, Moon and the Melodies, Blue Bell Knoll all hold fantastic memories of places I have lived, adventures, girlfriends.
I also really like the stuff Liz did with Future Sound of London... and of course the fabulous "teardrop" with Massive Attack.

There can be no question about it. There is only one answer to this, and it's Blue Bell Knoll!
For me, only! It's one of their many albums that brings me to tears, but it has the most powerful emotional effect, overall. Hands down....

Overrated? Hell no.....................! Like I said, there are others that bring me to tears, but this one opens the watersheds all the way. I will never grow tired of it. Nor of the memories it brings back to me. It just takes my breath away and I stop breathing for a little while until my body brings me back.
