Re: Saw Them Live?
Tue, January 27, 2004 - 6:17 PMYes... HoLV tour for me too, in Seattle for the second leg of the tour. (also saw them for 4CC tour, but was not blown away).
That HoLV show was absolute bliss... I was floating an inch or two above the floor, 15 feet away from both Liz and Robin.
Standing there at the front of the floor before the show, the burly security/crowd control guy in front of us kept saying something like "You need to stay back... you need to back up a bit... I don't want anything to get out of hand here..."
We of course were laughing at that last bit.
I asked him "You haven't heard these guys before have you?"
He shook his head no.
"You think this is going to be punk rock with crowd surfing and moshing, right?"
He kinda went "Well..."
I said "Don't worry, there will be no wildness here... this band is different. You'll have an easy night."
So the show starts ("Dials" plays over the loudpseakers as the lights go down, and as Simon, Robin and finally Liz enter the stage), first song starts playing (I don't have the setlist handy, but I think it was "Blue Bell Knoll") and everyone gets all crazy and floaty simultaneously. The crowd control guy twists his head (he's facing us) during the first few songs from time to time to sneak a peek at Liz as she sings. By the 3rd or 4th song, he's angled his body so he doesn't have to crane his neck. At one point about midway through the show, I notice that he is somewhat open-mouthed, eyes locked on Liz... presumably in some sort of rapture. I elbowed my companions to get them to see this guy - we all got a great laugh out of that.
Highlight of the night though... when Carolyn's Fingers went into the instrumental break that the song ends with, Robin and Simon cranked it up a bit... right as the lasers flicked on... and the whole place went nucking futs.
Ahhhhhh.... such a great show.
Wish I could have caught em for the Milk and Kisses tour.
That's my main regret... -

Wed, January 28, 2004 - 7:51 AMBack in their HEYDAY in '85 at a new music festival in Italy.. unfortunately the sound was GOD-AWFUL and Liz ended up breaking down in tears!! A few of us managed to go BACKSTAGE to console her.. and what a sweet and ultra-sensitive SOUL she was!!

Never Saw Them Live
Fri, January 30, 2004 - 2:14 AMI remember completely missing them (as I do with ALL shows in my life) when they played at UCIrvine while I was working on a student dance piece durring the war (the FIRST time we bombed the fuck out of Bagdad) -

Re: Never Saw Them Live
Fri, February 13, 2004 - 9:55 AMTwice at the Warfield, San Francisco. The Four Calendar Cafe tour and the M&K tour. Didn't see any lasers. Lots of computerized lighting -but no lasers. It was packed with die-hard fans that screamed things like "We love you, Liz" between songs. Liz did more "barking" at the 4CC show. She was singing much better when I saw them touring for M&K. -

Re: Never Saw Them Live
Thu, February 26, 2004 - 1:08 PMOh yeah, saw them on the M&K tour at the Mayan in LA. Not only was that a magical evening in and of itself, but I will never feel the same feeling as when they encorred with Cherry Colored Funk. I knew then how Ivo felt when he heard EF for the first time. The hair on the back of your neck stands on end! And like Ivo, there are only three artists that can do that for me, Lisa Gerrard, Le Mystere De Voix Bulgares and Elizabeth Frasier. (yeah so I stole the idea from the liner notes from the 1st LMDVB album... but so what, it's true.) -

Re: Never Saw Them Live
Mon, March 1, 2004 - 7:09 PMI saw them for the Four Calendar Cafe tour. I *almost* got to talk to LIz she was leaving the venue outside in the alleyway, I only got to say "we love you Liz!" as she jumped into a car. It was a really awesome concert although I would have loved to see them in thier earlier days. I don't think they played Blue Bell Knoll.

Re: Saw Them Live?
Mon, June 21, 2004 - 10:52 PMYes, in the early 80's, the "Heaven or Las Vegas" tour I think. I saw them at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. Mazzy Star opened for them, whom I remember thinking at the time was the whiney. The lead singer actually stopped singing during the second song and made some complaint to the sound guys. She seemed all in a huff and a mood through the set. Not a good prelude to such a serene band as The Cocteau Twins. Then the Cocteau Twins entered, Elizabeth last. I remember thinking that she was dressed so plainly. I had imagined flowing Stevie Nicks-type gypsy clothes, but she wore a turtleneck seater and jeans. They began to pour out dry ice smoke along the stage, and she began to sing. I just sat with my eyes closed for long minutes listening to the music I had been making love to flow out. She truly has the most moving voice. -

Tue, June 29, 2004 - 9:41 AMyour must be crazy if you dont like hope sandoval (mazzy star())) :) she and EFrazier are two of my top favorite handful of female singers~~~ Hope had a very difficult time on tour because she is EXTREMELY introverted. she's not whiney at all..
i saw Cocteau Twins live on two occasions. Both were quite impressive, they sounded just like they do on their albums.

Tue, June 29, 2004 - 11:15 AM>>Yes, in the early 80's, the "Heaven or Las Vegas" tour I think<<
not too likely. HOLV does not show up until 1990. And I don't think they played in L.A. in the early eighties. They had a tour scheduled for the states but it was cancelled. -

Re: Saw Them Live?
Tue, June 29, 2004 - 7:53 PMcocteau twins did perform live in LA on September 15, 1985. they also played a variety of other US cities around the same time.
i've been lucky enough to have seen them perform live at 4 gigs and in person. they are truly remarkable performers. -

Re: Saw Them Live?
Tue, June 29, 2004 - 9:17 PMI appreciate your post. Between the one post saying I must be crazy for not liking Mazzy Star (very encouraging response to my first post to this tribe by the way) and the one saying I didn't see them in L.A. in the 80's, I figured I was in a tribe filled with negative people. That is not how i think of the Cocteau Twins, and would not want to think all their fans here are that way. Anyway, thank you for confirming my reality. -

Re: Saw Them Live?
Wed, June 30, 2004 - 12:39 PMlook, I lined up to see them in the mid eighties during their U.S. tour. My date was cancelled. I was bummed.
Also, um, HOLV released in 1990. You might call that negative. I call it factual. -

Re: Saw Them Live?
Wed, July 21, 2004 - 5:45 PMI saw them at the Beacon for HOLV and the vocals were essentially inaudible. I saw them on Jay Leno and Liz was doing some strange, wince-inducing Yoko type vocalizing. Sadly, never saw them again.
But I do have the godhead Live in London bootleg, a show from 1986. Absolutely amazing stuff. Poor, sweet, little Liz. She never recovered after Jeff Buckley died. -

Re: Saw Them Live?
Wed, July 21, 2004 - 5:59 PMI saw them at the Warfield some number of years ago probably for Milk and Kisses. I was amazed at the sound quality since their stuff uses so many effects. What I remember most is standing next to this guy who was at times sobbing and so weak in the knees that his friends had to hold him up, he screamed "WE LOVE YOU ELIZABETH" over and over. I myself didn't cry but totally understood what this guy was experiencing. It was just incredibly beautiful... -

Re: Saw Them Live?
Sun, July 25, 2004 - 6:21 PMI've actually seen them 5 times...
Twice on the HOLV tour (at the Wiltern, and at the Bren Events Center at UCI), twice at the Warfield for the 4CC, and once (at the Warfield) on the Milk & Kisses tour.
Had I suspected that this would be their last album/tour, I would have become a groupie on that last tour.
I must say that the 1st and last tours definitely impressed me the most. Liz was going through an interesting phase during the 4CC tour, where the music sounded the same, but her vocals were really out there.
The first show was probably the all time best for me... being that I was having an "ecstatic" experience... and having that wall of sound coming at me for almost two hours was sublime. I really felt like I had reached Nirvana. I just held my friends' hands and cried.
I would disagree that the shows sound anything like the albums... this primarily because Liz can't really overdub herself in a live venue. However, the overall effect was blissful every single time.
A dear friend of mine visited September Sound studios shortly after the Milk and Kisses tour, and saw some reels with the "working" names of songs that were in progress for the forthcoming Cocteau album. When they broke up shortly thereafter, I started to contemplate how many years it would be until we would eventually hear "The Lost Cocteau Twins Tapes"
One can only hope! -

Re: Saw Them Live?
Fri, August 6, 2004 - 11:04 AMI saw them also on the Heaven or Las Vegas tour. I was in the 12th row at the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley and that night I realized that Elizabeth Fraser is one of the most beautiful women ever (her voice, her presence...). That still lives in my memory as one of the best shows I've ever seen. -

Re: Saw Them Live?
Wed, August 18, 2004 - 1:36 AMSaw them in Birmingham (UK) on the HOLV tour. Amazing. Only marred by between-song heckling of 'Robin, ya fat ba$^ard' and 'Liz, get ya t%ts out'. A most intellectual crowd. Road, River and Rail just took me somewhere else that evening.
Then saw them at Wolverhampton on the FCC tour. Live percussion and drums this time. Liz's voice took a while to warm-up if I remember, but the whole event was magic. From The Flagstones was ethereal that night.
Killing Joke have come back with an excellent album, so have The Cure - please see this as a sign Cocteaus...
