ok now I have had people ask me before what cocteau twins would be considered. Now I do not know if there actually is something they are under. But I couldn't explain , I think I thought of a million words , Melodic , sometimes etheral , dreampopish , scottish , euro rock?
I have no idea how to answer them. Is there actualy something? and what title would you put them under if you had to besides just " Cocteau Twins."

From a DJ perspective I usually tell people: early 4ad sound - big guitars lotsa echo (very ethereal yes) see also: Lush, Dif Juz and Dead Can Dance.. an early 80s sound that just won't fade away!! Way more cool than anything that's out there now with the notable exception of Bjork and Radiohead.. but precious few others!

It is hard to categorize them. Their sound & the feelings they invoke are so universal. Growing up in L.A. many people I know categorized them as "death-rock".

It is odd. Stuff like Christian Death, Alien Sex Fiend, The Cure, etc. & of course Cocteau Twins was considered "death rock". It was really lame. If you dressed in black then the music you listened to was considered "death rock". I never thought as Cocteau Twins being "death rock". But unfortunately it was all clumped together.

            Sal,

I totally agree. Living in L.A. during my early punk/goth years They lumped all of that together. And yes if you wore black then it was considered death rock???

Ahhhhh memory flashback screen going blurry... ohhh I'm back now.

ummm? dunno about that? They were considered Gothic (still are in some circles), but never death rock, not even in LA. Early stuff....Post Punk, that was their roots...punk....that was the era...Post Punk. Then as time went on, I would say...Treasure to Victorialand (and Aikea-guinea Ep,Tiny D and Echoes, in between), Ethereal....Then, well from BBK on is where things changed up quite a bit...I hate the term, but I guess for the later stuff shoegaze or dream pop would apply?....who knows, and at the end of the day, does it really matter? Nope! It's just great music!

I never catgorized them as death rock. But there were people (in my personal experience) who categorized them, along with other artists, as death rock. I never liked the term death rock. But the part of L.A. that I grew up in & around we were called death rockers & (unfortunately) everything that we listened (including Cocteau Twins) was clumped together. Never liked it but there it was.

Death rock? How odd. I usually associate Christian Death or Alien Sex Fiend with DR, not Cocteau Twins -- totally different sound.

the first time I heard any CT, was late at night...was it on Sundays?...The show on KROQ in L.A. called Rodney on the ROQ. He favored girl groups from the Go-Go's to the Sherells. When I heard a track from Ivo, I pictured a Japanese girl group in boufants.

After having my own copy of the album, I pictured them (the two women singing) as a more gothic/romantic version of Strawberry Switchblace, but with an Alphonse Mucha influence. (I must scan my drawing and upload it some time)

But that's just the visuals. The sound must be categorized at a constantly-evolving form of 4AD sound art. That's the best I can do.

I always used "ethereal", but a friend of mine coined (or at least I had never heard it before) "shimmer", which always sounded very appropriate to me.

I have never heard shimmer used before to describe a sound or type of music, but I like it a lot and I defly think it should be used for something like Cocteau Twins! Did you just make that up so geniusly or have you heard it been called so? SHIMMER, I am in love with this word now damb it! Thanks

yeah, I heard it first from my friend, pete, who I just convinced to join up with tribe. I'll try to shepherd him in to the cocteau fold.

Oh, hey, cheers, just read this thread (blushing). I needed to call Cocteau Twins something in iTunes, and that was the only word that really seemed to fit.

Some other stuff in the same category are My Bloody Valentine (all those shimmering distorted guitars in the background), some of the not-noisy Flying Saucer Attack tracks, and a band called Sully.

i've always thought of them to be dreampop or shoegazer music

Damn, I was going to say that as I was reading down this thread.

Btw, when is dreampop/SG coming back anyway? It's about time that younger artists re-discover the genre.

I have also heard CT referred to as Progressive Alternative, and I found that to be too broad a generalization and something that an A&R person thought up. And they were lumped in with everything from Sarah McLaughlin to Porcupine Tree.

i grew up in LA as well and i had been listening to the cocteau twins for a while until i started going out socially and was kind of appalled to find they had been categrized as "goth."

at any rate, for newer shoegazer stuff i would highly recommend the appleseed cast - low level owl volumes i & ii.

If you want to find it one CDnow/Amazon it's listed as follows...

    Alternative Rock > Indie & Lo-Fi > Indie Pop > Dream Pop

The thing I find funny is that the have My bloody Valentine a band I thought went well with Cocteau Twins in a seprate section...

    Alternative Rock > Indie & Lo-Fi > Shoegazing

    So...
What is the exact difference between Dream Pop & Shoegazer?

As one mentioned, they started sorta indi/gothic/post-punk and thru the 15+/- years span, they've changed quite a bit... dreampop, ethereal, shimmer to whatever else.. but except death rock! hahaha!
